The Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) is responsible for the EU’s economic policy, taxation issues and the regulation of financial services, as well as for issues regarding the euro and the coordination of EU positions for meetings at international level and the financial aspects of international negotiations on measures to tackle climate change. ECOFIN generally meets once a month and is composed of the economic and finance Ministers of all the member states. The day before each ECOFIN Council meeting, a meeting of the Eurogroup Ministers takes place. The Eurogroup brings together the Finance Ministers of the Member States of the Eurozone, aiming at the enhancing of the economic policy coordination.

Council Economic and Financial Affairs (Ecofin)

The Council configuration on Economic and Financial Affairs (ECOFIN) is composed of the Ministers (or State Secretaries) of Economic Affairs of the Member States of the EU. Member states that have the euro as their currency form a sub-group known as the Eurogroup.

In the Council of the European Union, the ministers from the EU Member States take a joint decision on the policy to be implemented within the EU. The Council is supported by the Committee of Permanent Representatives, which prepares decisions and guards the implementation and adherence of the decisions monitored by the Council.
