Maastricht Monnet Lecture Series 2012 - Hoofdinhoud
fourth Maastricht Monnet Lecture, organized by the Maastricht Centre for European Governance (Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences), in cooperation with the Montesquieu Institute Maastricht, will take place on Tuesday, May 22, 2012, 8:00pm until 10:00pm at the Aula Faculty of Economics, Tongersestraat 53, Maastricht.
Prof. Frank Vandenbroucke will speak on “The EU needs a social investment pact”.
Frank Vandenbroucke is professor of Social Economic Analysis at the University of Antwerp professor at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL), and professor at the Den Uyl Chair at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). He was Vice-Minister-President of the Flemish Government and Flemish Minister for Work, Education and Training (2004–2009). He has been member of the Flemish Parliament (2009) and of the Belgian Senate (2010), and was awarded by King Albert II of Belgium of the title of Minister of State (2009).
At EU level, he was active in outlining the Open Method of Coordination among Member States to support the enactment of the 2000 Lisbon Strategy. He later worked for the introduction of an ‘horizontal social clause’ in the Lisbon Treaty (today’s art. 9 TFEU) to provide a stronger legal basis for welfare policies in the EU.
The lecture will be introduced by Dr Michael Shackleton, Special Chair in European Institutions at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Maastricht University.
