De eurocrisis beheerst momenteel het leven in Nederland en Europa. Terwijl er druk wordt onderhandeld over het oplossen van de crisis, moet er echter ook over de rol van Europa na de crisis worden nagedacht. De crisis levert namelijk niet alleen vragen op over overheidsfinanciën en schuld, maar ook het Europa van de toekomst.
In hoeverre is Europa meer dan een intergouvernementele vorm van samenwerking ter ondersteuning van een vrije markt? Welke hervormingen vindt Europa belangrijk? In welke mate zullen landen, na de sanering van hun overheidsfinanciën en de introductie van structurele hervormingen, op Europese steun kunnen rekenen?
En wat is Europese solidariteit, kan deze bestaan zonder een gevoel van behoren in Europa, dus een Europese identiteit? Kortom, wat is Europa, en wat zou het moeten zijn?
Sprekers zijn Thijs Berman (Europarlementariër voor de PvdA), Wim van de Camp (Europarlementariër voor het CDA), Bas Eickhout (Europarlementariër voor Groenlinks), Wim Voermans (Hoogleraar Staats- en Bestuursrecht), Bernard Steunenberg (Hoogleraar Bestuurskunde en Europese Politiek), Richard Griffiths (Hoogleraar Economische en Sociale Geschiedenis).
Het debat wordt geleid door Roel Janssen, financieel-economisch journalist en auteur van onder andere De Euro, twintig jaar na het verdrag van Maastricht .
