Target Group

This course is designed for anyone whose work relates to the treatment of personal data. It is aimed at, among others, data protection officers, national and sub-national officials, compliance officers, information officers, records managers, human resources officers, data protection and information lawyers, marketing managers, staff of civil liberties associations, lobbyists and researchers.

Description

The course will offer an explanation of the key concepts and principles of privacy, before addressing the latest developments and challenges in the field of personal data use and protection. How should personal data be protected in a globalised world with increased mobility and in the wake of modern communication and information technologies? Which data is accessed and exchanged by public authorities and private companies? How well are the current rules on personal data protection working? What are the expectations of individuals, businesses and society as a whole? Numerous practical examples coming from both the public and private sectors, combined with a high degree of interactivity, will provide participants with all they need to know about changes to data protection practice, as well as an insight into how to handle the myriad issues that arise in the workplace on a daily basis, such as file organisation, corporate notifications and models.

Learning Methodology

A combination of lectures, structured discussions and case studies.

Objectives

Participants will receive a thorough grounding in the fundamental requirements of data protection.

This will give organisations key resources and information to manoeuvre within the rapidly expanding and increasingly important fields of data protection, privacy and records management.

One-day standard programme

We also offer a standard one-day version of this course with a specific focus on the key concepts and principles embedded in Regulation 45/2001 and in Directive 95/46/EC. The target group and objectives are basically the same as those of the two-day version, but the programme is targeted to the needs of EU officials and persons who cannot be absent from their work for more than a day. The programme consists of the following sessions: overview of the EU Data Protection Legal Framework; main concepts, scope and rules on lawful data processing; actors and roles, such as DPO, controllers, processors; the notification procedure; and case studies.
