On Friday 18 June 2010, the Montesquieu Institute hosted its annual graduation and Award Ceremony in the Senate in The Hague. During this ceremony, the winners of the Awards were announced and the certificates for the graduates of the Montesquieu Institute Masterclass were presented.

After the official ceremony, all those attending the ceremony were guests of the Montesquieu Institute at a reception in the Senate Building. The participants of both the Masterclass and the Awards had an opportunity to exchange experiences with each other and all other guests.

Montesquieu Awards

The jury, chaired by former Member of Parliament Godelieve van Heteren, selected the winners in the categories Bachelor, Master and Europe Awards a large number of participants. The following participants have won in their respective categories:

Bachelor thesis, Master Thesis and scientific articles by Young Academics. Julian Grosse won the Bachelor thesis award with his thesis called 'A Swedish Perspective. An Analysis of the Economic and Political Consequences of Being an Outsider'. Pauline de Morree was the winner of the Master thesis Award with her thesis titled 'Parlementaire immuniteit in een Europese context' (Parliamentary immunity in a European Context) and Armin Cuyvers won the Europe Award with his article 'Tussen Scyllii and Charybdii: terrorisme, rechtsbescherming en de verhouding tussen rechtsordes in Kadi' (Between Scyllii and Charybdii: terrorism, judicial protection and the relation between legal systems in Kadi).

Masterclass

Studenten van de Masterclass 2010

During the first semester of 2010, the participants of the Montesquieu Masterclass “Brick by brick. Building European Parliamentary Systems before and after 1989” followed a series of lectures about many of the various aspects of the building of parliamentary systems in Europe.

Moreover, the participants took part in a field trip to Berlin in March 2010. The field trip was prepared in cooperation with the Kommission fur Geschichte des Parlamentarismus und der politischen Parteien (KGParl) in Berlin. During the trip much attention was given to the process of German Unification and its implications for European Parliamentary Systems. The Masterclass was concluded by writing a final paper.

Mr. Arz von Straussenburg, deputy head of the German Mission in The Hague, handed out the certificates to the Masterclass students. A representative from KGParl, Dr. Tobias Kaiser, came over from Berlin to attend the ceremony as well.
