Directorate-General for Interpretation (SCIC) - Montesquieu Institute

This Directorate-General (the Common Translation and Conference service) provides translation services during meetings organised by the Commission or other institutions that use this service.

The DG is indispensable for the decision-making proces within the EU as it makes communication between speakers of different language possible. Written texts are translated by the Translation service of the European Commission.

The main tasks are:

• - 

  to guarantee the availability of well trained translators, also for the languages of the new member states
• - 

  to maintain and make available as much meeting-rooms as possible for use by clients
• - 

  to encourage clients to brief and provide documentation material to translators on time
• - 

  to make optimal use of the possibilities provided by new technologies
